Spine Basti

Spine Basti is a specialized Ayurvedic therapy that focuses on relieving spinal pain, stiffness, and nerve-related disorders. This treatment involves retaining warm medicated oil along the spine using a dough ring, deeply nourishing the vertebrae, improving flexibility, and enhancing nervous system function.

Ayurvedic Philosophy

As part of Bahirparimarjana Chikitsa (external Ayurvedic therapies), Spine Basti is derived from two Sanskrit words: “Spine” (vertebral column) and “Basti” (retention or container). This therapy involves forming a reservoir with dough along the spinal region and filling it with warm medicated oil. The therapeutic warmth penetrates deep into the muscles and nerves, alleviating discomfort, improving circulation, and strengthening the spinal structure.

The choice of oil and herbs varies based on an individual’s health condition and body constitution, commonly including:

  • Mahanarayan Tailam – Strengthens muscles and relieves stiffness.
  • Dhanwantharam Tailam – Improves nerve function and reduces spinal inflammation.
  • Kottamchukkadi Tailam – Alleviates back pain and promotes spinal flexibility.
  • Bala Tailam – Nourishes and rejuvenates the vertebral discs.
  • Sahacharadi Tailam – Helps in reducing Vata-related back and nerve pain.

Spine Basti is particularly effective for Vata dosha imbalances, addressing lower back pain, sciatica, and spinal degenerative conditions.
