Janu Basti

Janu Basti is a specialized Ayurvedic therapy that provides deep relief for knee pain, joint stiffness, and inflammation. This treatment involves retaining warm medicated oil over the knee joint in a dough ring, improving lubrication, mobility, and overall joint health.

Ayurvedic Philosophy

As part of Bahirparimarjana Chikitsa (external Ayurvedic therapies), Janu Basti is derived from two Sanskrit words: “Janu” (knee joint) and “Basti” (retention or container). This therapy involves creating a reservoir with dough around the knee joint and filling it with warm medicated oil. The heat and herbal properties penetrate deep into the tissues, alleviating pain, reducing inflammation, and promoting flexibility.

The choice of oil and herbs varies depending on the individual’s body constitution and condition, commonly including:

  • Mahanarayan Tailam – Relieves joint pain and strengthens cartilage.
  • Dhanwantharam Tailam – Reduces swelling and promotes nerve health.
  • Kottamchukkadi Tailam – Alleviates arthritis and knee stiffness.
  • Bala Tailam – Strengthens ligaments and supports knee mobility.
  • Sahacharadi Tailam – Helps in reducing Vata-related joint pain.

Janu Basti is particularly effective for Vata dosha imbalances, addressing osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other degenerative joint conditions.
