Shirodhara Massage

Shirodhara is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy that involves the continuous pouring of warm herbal oil over the forehead. This treatment is known for its deep relaxation benefits, helping to enhance sleep quality, reduce stress, and calm the nervous system.

about therapy

As part of the Bahiparimarjana Chikitsa (external Ayurvedic therapies), Shirodhara is derived from two Sanskrit words: “Shira” (head) and “Dhara” (flow). This practice involves a steady stream of therapeutic liquids poured onto the forehead for a specified duration, inducing a meditative state.

The liquid used varies depending on the condition being treated and may include:

  • Medicated oils
  • Buttermilk
  • Milk
  • Plain water
  • Coconut water

The head is considered “Uttamanga,” the control center of the body, influencing both mental and physical well-being. Shirodhara helps balance doshas, particularly calming excess Vata and Pitta, and deeply relaxes the mind and body.
